Gardening

Substances and materials such as dirt, thorns, soil, insects and blades of grass can fly into the eye while in the garden.

Such elements can cause serious irritation to the eyes, leading to infection, damage to the cornea, or damage to vision. It is important that if you incur a foreign body substance in your eye to have it checked and treated by an eye health professional as soon as possible.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Simple and inexpensive gardening goggles such as the Pyramex G204 Indirect Vent Goggle with Clear Anti-Fog Lens can provide easy and quick protection for the times you handle chemicals or work in the garden.

Home Eye Safety

🏘 With half of all eye injuries happening in the home, we could all use a gentle reminder about the importance of eye safety. The American Academy of Ophthalmologists sponsors Eye Injury Prevention Month every October to reinforce the importance of preventing accidents and injury. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀ 🥽⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀Careless accidents can happen when we are not regularly assessing our surroundings. Most people are aware of eye safety in the workplace, but don’t think about the hazards that place their eyes at risk at home. Our homes are full of everyday objects that can cause eye injury.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Home activities that can injure your eyes include:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀ * Cleaning. Chemicals like bleach in household cleaning products cause 125,000 eye injuries each year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀ * Home Improvement. Screws, nails and hand tools can launch into the air—and into your eyes. Power tools can also send wood chips or other substances flying into the air.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀ * Yard Work. Lawn mowers, trimmers and even shovels can throw dirt and debris into the air. Branches, twigs and thorns can also be dangerous.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀ 👁⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀ Your vision is irreplaceable, so treat it with care. Eye injury risk increases with factors such as being rushed, feeling tired, performing an unfamiliar task or being distracted. Sometimes, all we need is a regular “habit checkup” to see how well we are caring for our eyesight. Make this year your best yet when it comes to your vision. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
